Men's Soccer Misses Opportunities, Comes Up Empty At San Francisco, 1-0
Sept. 9, 2001
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - -
It has plagued the Oregon State men's soccer team all year, and it haunted them again in Sunday's 1-0 loss to San Francisco at the USF Diadora Classic. The Beavers (0-4-0) were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities that could have put them in the driver's seat, as has been the case for much of the young season, allowing USF to steal a victory on its home turf.
OSU's defense put together another stingy performance, holding San Francisco (3-1-0) scoreless for the match's first 88 minutes. The Beavers controlled the entire first half against a team they beat 1-0 in Corvallis a year ago. OSU let three opportunities slip away however, putting the pressure squarely on the shoulders of the defense to preserve the shutout in the face of 15 USF shots.
The shutout ended at the 88:29 mark when USF's Anthony Medina took a pass from Gabe Sturm and launched a shot from the middle of the box. OSU keeper Peter Billmeyer, who stopped six shots on the day, couldn't corral the shot.
'I thought we had control of the game in the first half, but again, we couldn't finish,' Taylor said. 'We had three opportunities and we couldn't finish.
'I feel bad for our defense - they worked hard and played well. We need to take the pressure off the backs and the midfield by putting away our chances.'
OSU had eight chances on the day, as OSU got off eight shots, including four on-goal. Ignacio Cid, OSU's leading shot-taker on the year, fired four on the afternoon.
'We had opportunities in the second half as well, but we didn't look sharp when trying to finish,' Taylor said. 'It's going to be a long season unless people take responsibility for putting balls in the back of the net. It's a lack of concentration on our finishing touch.'
OSU opens its home slate on Sunday, Sept. 16, with a match against Cal-Santa Barbara at noon.
