Pac-10 Postpones All Athletic Contests (9/11/01)

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- The Pacific-10 Conference has voted that Conference competition in all sports will not be conducted through the weekend in sympathy to the national tragedy that occured today. Participation in non-conference competition in each sport will be left to the discretion of each institution. Conference Commissioner Tom Hansen was requested to take a leadership role with other Division I conferences in urging postponement of all competitionnationally through the weekend.
'In light of the tragic events which occured in our nation today, it would be inappropriate to continue our scheduled Conference competitions,' said Hansen. 'The safety and welfare of our student-athletes is our first priority, along with the safety of our fans. We will continue to monitor national events and directives of the federal government. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the immense tragedy that unfolded today.'
No immediate plans have been formulated to reschedule any postponed or cancelled competitions.
