Stanford Cancels or Postpones All Athletic Events Through Weekend
Sept. 12, 2001
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford University announced today that all athletic events scheduled through Sunday, September 16, will be cancelled or postponed due to the recent national events. Athletic Director Ted Leland said that the decision not to participate in intercollegiate athletic events is the 'right thing to do in light of the tragic events of yesterday.'
'Due to the horrific events of yesterday, we have decided not to participate in intercollegiate athletic events through this weekend,' said Leland. 'Our focus is on the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans. The games are insignificant. It is important at this time that we turn our attention to the national crisis at hand and resume our intercollegiate activity next week.'
The Stanford-San Jose State football game scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed until Saturday, December 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Spartan Stadium. The game will be the final regular season game for both teams. Tickets for the postponed game will be honored at Spartan Stadium on December 1.
'We appreciate the efforts of our friends and colleagues from San Jose State in accommodating this change,' said Leland. 'It is indeed unfortunate that we couldn't play this Saturday. Our game with San Jose State is one of the highlights of our season and we're thrilled that we were able to reschedule for December 1.'
'It is unfortunate that our country or any country should have to endure the tragic events of yesterday,' said Cardinal head football coach Tyrone Willingham. 'Our condolences go to the families and volunteers who have lost their lives. I hope that in time they will, with the assistance of family and friends, eventually find peace in this senseless loss of life.'
'I am fortunate to work at a university that realizes and places a high value on human life and believes that human life is more important than a sporting event,' he said. 'It is then appropriate and with respect that we postpone our football game with San Jose State until December 1. I again express our deepest sympathy to those who have been directly and indirectly effected by this heinous act,' said Willingham.
Other home events which have been cancelled include women's volleyball on September 14 (vs. Arizona) and September 15 (vs. Arizona State) and women's soccer on September 16 (vs. Notre Dame). Cardinal teams scheduled to play on the road included the water polo team on September 14 ( at UC San Diego) and at the Southern California Tournament on September 15-16 (at USC), the men's soccer team on September 14-15 (at the SMU/Nike Classic in Dallas) and the field hockey team September 12 (vs. Central Michigan in Muncie, Ind.) and September 13 (at Miami, Ohio).
