Stanford Tennis Well-Represented In ITA Preseason Rankings

SKILLMAN, N.J. - Five different men's and women's tennis players have been awarded preseason rankings, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as released earlier this morning. The national rankings are given to the top-100 men's and women's players.
On the men's side, the following five players have been awarded singles rankings: senior K.J. Hippensteel is currently ranked No. 5, junior David Martin No. 34, junior Ryan Haviland No. 48, junior Scott Lipsky No. 57 and freshman Sam Warburg tied with six others at No. 100. Hippensteel, an ITA Singles All-American and NCAA Singles quarterfinalist one year ago, finished last season ranked No. 13 with a 35-9 overall mark. Martin went 25-14 overall last season and finished with a No. 60 final ranking, while Lipsky ended his season at No. 94 and finished 21-4. Haviland was a Second Team All Pac-10 selection and went 22-9 overall in 2001. Warburg is a freshman from Jesuit High School in Sacramento, Calif. and is the No. 1 ranked player (18 division) in Northern California.
The doubles team of Lipsky and Martin are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation, following their memorable season of a year ago. Stanford's top tandem reached the NCAA Semifinals and finished with a final record of 37-7 and a ranking of No. 10. The other Cardinal doubles team ranked in the top-50 is the duo of Ryan Haviland and K.J. Hippensteel at the No. 20 spot.
The women also have five singles players ranked in the top-100. Senior Lauren Kalvaria, who advanced to last year's NCAA singles championship, is ranked No. 2 in thenation after finishing with a 39-4 overall mark in 2001. Other Stanford women to receive preseason singles rankings are: senior Gabriela Lastra at No. 10, senior Keiko Tokuda No. 30, sophomore Lauren Barnikow is ranked No. 73 and freshman Erin Burdette at No. 93. Lastra ended last season with a final ranking of No.16 and went 34-6 overall. Tokuda had an overall 29-10 mark, while Barnikow put together a solid rookie campaign going 34-7 in her first season. Burdette was the 2000 Easter Bowl doubles winner with Barnikow and won a USTA Satellite event in El Paso, Texas.
The doubles team of Kalvaria and Lastra are currently ranked No. 7 after going 4-0 and winning the ITA All-American title last season. The tandem of Barnikow and Burdette is also ranked in the top-20, appearing at No. 16.
