Bruins Visit Great Northwest

Eric Peterson's UCLA women's and men's cross country teams on Saturday (Sept. 22) will compete at the University of Washington Sundodger Invitational in Seattle. The races begin at 9 a.m. (9 a.m.-women's 5000m open race, 9:30 a.m.-men's 8000m open race, 10:15 a.m.-women's 5000m invitational race, 10:45 a.m.-men's 8000m invitational race) and will be held in Lincoln Park.
Both the Bruin women and men squads will take 10 runners. Running for the UCLA women will be the Bruins' Top 7, along with three other runners. Leading UCLA will be freshman Alejandra Barrientos, junior Elaine Canchola, freshman Carmen Winant, freshman Lori Mann, sophomore Jessica Marr, sophomore Tiffany Burgess and sophomore Valerie Flores. Also running will be junior Kelly Grimes, freshman Carolyn Shea and junior Julia Barbour.
Two weeks ago (Sept. 1) the Bruin women opened the 2001 season by placing second at the CS Fullerton/Jammin' Invite. Preseason No. 3 Stanford won the event, followed by UCLA. The Bruins were led by Barrientos, from San Lorenzo Valley HS in Felton, who finished fifth over the 5000m course in a time of 17:54.1 and Canchola, from Nordhoff HS in Ojai, who placed seventh (17:58.8).
The Bruin men will be led by senior Bryan Green, sophomore Jon Rankin, freshman Ben Aragon, freshman Robert Kubler, senior Justin Patananan, freshman Puneet Mahan and freshman Seth Neumuller. Also running for the Bruins will be junior Phil Young, freshman Reggie Oronoz and freshman Nick Thornton.
In men's competition at the CS Fullerton/Jammin' Invite, the Bruin men placed third in team scoring, behind preseason No. 2 Stanford and Cal Baptist. Individually, UCLA was led by Green, from Littlerock HS in Palmdale, who placed fifth over the 8000m course in a time of 24:49.2 and Rankin, from Monte Vista HS in Spring Valley, finishing eighth (24:58.3). Dating back to last season, except at the 2000 NCAA Championship meet, Green has placed in the Top 10 in every Bruin competition.
Looking ahead, on Sept. 29, the Bruin women's and men's cross country teams will travel to Minneapolis, MN to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota.
