Men's Soccer Trips Up No. 14 San Jose State, 3-2
Sept. 18, 2001
SAN JOSE, Calif. - When a team can't remember the last time it lost a regular season game, you know they're good. San Jose State University is one of the few teams that can truly boast that sentiment. Dating back to Nov. 12, 1999, the Spartans have not lost a regular season game after finishing 2000 with an unbeaten record (20-0-1).
That was until today.
California went into Spartan Stadium Monday night with the daunting task of overcoming not only a 14th-ranked team, but also a little history.
Austin Ripmaster scored two goals in the second period to give Cal a 3-2 win over SJSU to break the Spartans' 25-game winning streak.
Ripmaster's first goal at the beginning of the second period, broke a 1-1 tie. His second goal of the night came at the 70:41 mark, proving to be the game winner.
The Spartans scored the first goal of the game off Sven Juhlin's shot 27:06into the match. The Golden Bears tied the game on a Troy Roberts goaltoward the end of the first half.
SJSU's Fausto Villegas scored his first goal of the season on a penalty kick at 75:38 to bring the Spartans within a goal. The goal came three minutes after midfielder Lars Lyssand received a red card for a hard tackle and was ejected.
The win brought the Bears' record to 2-3-0 and their first win over a ranked opponent since Cal defeated No. 3 Indiana, 2-1, in last year's adidas-Legacy Classic.
'This was a tremendous win for our team and our program to be able to beat a team of San Jose State's caliber on the road,' said coach Kevin Grimes. 'They have not lost a regular season game since 1999, which shows how strong of a program they are and also how significant of a win it is for Cal.'
The Bears host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium.
