UCLA Alum John Godina Named USATF Athlete Of The Week

INDIANAPOLIS - UCLA alum John Godina, who won the men's shot put in thefinal meet of the elite 2001 season at Yokohama, Japan, has been named USATrack & Field's Athlete of the Week.
Godina's victory, with a mark of 20.92 meters/68 feet, 7.75 inches, was aperfect endingto a nearly perfect season. In 2001, Godina won the World Indoor andOutdoor titles to establish himself as the most dominant thrower in theworld this year. He also won the U.S. Outdoor title and lost only onceoutdoors, placing second at the Goodwill Games.
Other notable performances this week included Bruin alum Amy Acuff, whojumped 1.85m/6-0.75 in the high jump at Yokohama meet.
USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstandingperformers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each weekand features the athlete on the USATF Web site. Selections are based on topperformances and results from theprevious week.
Other Bruin alums who have been named Athletes of the Week for the 2001season include Meb Keflezighi (May 8, set American 10,000m record) andWillie Banks (Juluy 3, set World Masters record in the triple jump).
