#4 Stanford Sweeps Past WSU Volleyball
Sept. 20, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The 4th-ranked Stanford Cardinal volleyball team scored a 30-28, 30-26, 30-22 Pacific-10 Conference opening win over the Washington State University Cougars Thursday night before 1,299 fans at Bohler Gym.
Stanford remains undefeated at 7-0, 1-0 in conference while WSU falls to 5-3, 0-1 in Pac-10 with all losses coming to ranked teams.
'We had them on the ropes in the first game and then we ran off about five unforced errors and that is something this team has to come to grips with because right now we are beating ourselves,' WSU Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. 'That's an absolute mortal sin. We need to do two things: stop beating ourselves and be able to run off at least four or five points in a row.'
Stanford's Logan Tom, a two-time All-American, had 16 kills and 11 digs while freshman Ogonna Nnamani added 15 kills, hitting .400 for the night. Stanford hit .309 as a team.
WSU's Adrian Hankoff was the only Cougar in double figures with 12 kills. Melissa Boyle led all players with four blocks. The Cougs hit .197 as a team but stayed with the Cardinal in blocking as the much taller Stanford had 8 and WSU stopped 7.5 at the net.
'They don't make as many unforced errors as we do and they keep the ball in play,' Hankoff said. 'We were right there in all three games. If we would have won the first game, the momentum would have been in our favor. We didn't play as smart as we could have.'
Missed serves and hitting errors near the end of all three games proved to be the Cougars undoing.
'If we take care of what we are supposed to do on our court, we can win,' LaToya Harris said. 'Until we do that, we're going to have close games but they will win instead.'
Washington State hosts California (3-3, 0-1) Friday night in a 7 p.m. match at Bohler Gym. Cal lost at Washington Thursday night, 33-31, 30-16, 30-20.
