Oregon Volleyball Falls To No. 3 Arizona 3-1

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Oregon volleyball team opened the Pac-10 season with a 30-19, 30-19, 31-33, 30-18 loss to No. 3 Arizona at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. Oregon is 8-2 overall, 0-1 Pac-10 and Arizona improves to 6-0, 1-0.
Oregon's win in Game 3 marked the first time this season the Wildcats had lost a single game in a match. The Ducks led four times in the game, but trailed by the largest margin at 18-14. Oregon climbed its way back with a kill by Heather Gilmore and a key block by setter Sydney Chute and middle blocker Lindsay Closs. The Ducks tied the game at 25 before Arizona used a 5-2 run to lead 29-26. Oregon held off game point with a kill by Gilmore and another key block by Chute and Closs. The Game was tied again at 31 and a service error by Arizona gave the Ducks a one point advantage. Gilmore secured the win with a service ace.
The Wildcats, who are enjoying their highest ranking in school history, were 5-0 heading into the match, having won all 15 games in their matches.
Oregon's offense was spread out between senior Monique Tobbagi (16 kills), sophomore Heather Gilmore, who had a career-high 13 kills, and Stephanie Martin (12 kills). Closs led the blocking attack with six blocks and sophomore Lindsay Murphy led Oregon defensively with 10 digs.
Arizona had a narrow advantage in blocks (13-11), but outkilled Oregon 60-46.
The Ducks face Arizona State tomorrow at 7 p.m.
