Gonzaga Drops San Diego State 3-2 In OSU/Diadora Classic
Sept. 21, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Gonzaga's Arni Pjetursson netted two goals to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs (2-2-0) past San Diego State (0-3-1) by a count of 3-2 on Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium in the first of the afternoon's OSU/Diadora Classic doubleheader.
Pjetursson gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead when his shot found the back of the net at the 58:56 mark and effectively put the game away.
SDSU's Ryan Curtis wouldn't let the Aztecs go quietly though, as he scored unassisted from the middle of the box in the 86th minute to draw his squad within a goal, but SDSU's last-minute flurry went for naught.
Gonzaga's Taylor McCool launched a 20-yard blast from the far corner that sailed over the hands of SDSU's Brian Barnes to open the scoring for the Bulldogs in the 19th minute.
Pjetursson, who assisted on McCool's goal, also scored on a long-distance shot from just over the midfield stripe midway through the first half after Connor Quinn led him with a pass from the backfield.
Mike McCarthy went the distance in goal for Gonzaga, saving five shots along the way.
Both teams will be in action again on Sunday, as the Diadora Classic continues. Gonzaga takes on Sacramento State at noon, followed by San Diego State at Oregon State at approximately 2 p.m.
