No. 7 Women's Soccer Wins 12th Consecutive Home Match With 2-1 Victory Over Fresno State

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 7 Stanford women's soccer team (4-0) defeated Fresno State(2-2) 2-1 Friday night at Maloney Field in the second game of the Stanford Nike Tournament. The Cardinal win marks the 12th consecutive home victory, dating back to 1999 and the 13th consecutive home-opening win.
Both teams battled into a scoreless tie the first 40 minutes of the game, until Stanford broke through at the 44:32 mark. Freshman Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) entered the game for the first time in her collegiate career at 33:11, and made an immediate impact. After a near goal, the 2000 Parade Magazine All-American Player of the Year found the back of the net in the 44th minute to put Stanford up 1-0.
Fresno State came right back and 30 seconds later Barbara Davis hit a close shot from the right wing to tie the score 1-1 heading into the break.
After a few near goals, Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) came through with her fourth goal of the season on a touch pass from Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) and Sanderson in the penalty area. Wallis' game-winning goal came at 71:02, sealing the 2-1 victory for the Cardinal.
Stanford outshot the Bulldogs 19-4, including 10-2 in the second half.
Santa Clara won the first game of the Stanford Nike Tournament, defeating Dayton 3-1. The final game of the tournament features the Cardinal against the Flyers on Sunday, Sept. 23. The match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. at Maloney Field.
