Women's Volleyball Falls to USC
Sept. 21, 2001
LOS ANGELES - UCLA's eighth-ranked women's volleyball team lost its Pac-10 opener on Friday night, losing 3-0 to fifth-ranked USC at the Lyon Center on USC's campus. Game scores were 30-27, 30-21, 30-12. With the loss, the Bruins are now 5-2, 0-1 Pac-10, while the Women of Troy improve to 6-1, 1-0 Pac-10.
The Bruins kept it close in the opening game of the match, as the score was tied as late as 24-24, and UCLA within one point as late as 27-26. From that point, however, the momentum swung in USC's favor, as the Women of Troy closed out the game at 30-27 and would build large early leads in the second and third games en route to the 3-0 win.
Senior outside hitter Kristee Porter had a team-high 13 kills on the evening to go along with seven digs and a block assist. Ashley Bowles was the only Bruin with double-figure digs, checking in with 11.
The Bruins return to action in one week, with their home opener next Friday, Sept. 28, at Pauley Pavilion against No. 3 Arizona. UCLA completes that homestand the following night, Sept. 29, against Arizona State. Both matches are scheduled for 7 pm starts.
Friday's match at Pauley is Beach Night, and that match against the Wildcats will also be broadcast by FOX Sports Net on a tape-delayed basis. Both matches will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com with Lou Riggs, Michael Sondheimer and Paul Nihipali calling the action.
