Beavers Defeat Arizona State In Five Games
Sept. 22, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - Five Beavers registered double-figure kills as the Oregon State volleyball team picked up its first Pacific-10 win of the season with a five-game victory over Arizona State on Saturday. Game scores were 23-30, 32-30, 28-30, 30-15 and 15-9.
'This was a great all-around team effort. We lost game one, when they got a lead in game two, I called timeout,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'I told them they have to be a team out there, that they can't be a team only when things are going well and if they stay together, I guarantee the better team will win, not the better individuals. They stayed together the rest of the match.'
Katrina Nelson led the Beavers (7-3, 1-1) for the second match in a row, this time hitting .419 and tying her career-high with 18 kills. Megan McMillan had a career-high 13 kills while hitting .500, and OSU also got double-figures from Michele Solomon (12), Gina Schmidt (11) and Lori Daedelow (10).
The Beavers also had four players finish with double-figure digs, as OSU returned to its typical fashion of leading the defensive side of the match, outdigging the opposition, 83-73. Daedelow had a career-high 20 digs, while Schmidt (18) and McMillan (11) also turned in double-doubles. Nikki Neuburger added 12 digs to round out the Beavers in double-figures.
OSU also led the way in blocking, with 16 blocks to ASU's 11. Schmidt had five blocks, all solos, while Nelson and Solomon each had five as well (one solo and four assisted).
'Everyone on the floor found a way to contribute tonight, and we need that,' Somera said. 'That was the difference. Last night people weren't contibuting at all.
'This was a great rebound after (Friday's) poor performance. It showed they can be resilient, be tough, and turn the weekend into a split,' said Somera, whose team lost a three-game match at Arizona the night before. 'I'm most proud of the turnaround they made. After last night, they were really down and really disappointed. They came out tonight and competed.'
