Women's Soccer Wins Second Straight
Sept. 23, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Freshman Lindsey Green (Redondo Beach/Redondo Union HS) recorded her first career goal at 70:57 for the game-winner Sunday as the USC Trojans defeated the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 3-1, in non-conference action at McAlister Field. Sophomore Jessica Edwards (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson HS) and junior Jackie Fodor (Winnetka/Chatsworth HS) also tallied goals for the Trojans.
USC (3-3) controlled the tempo of the game from the outset and held a 14-4 margin in shots against Oakland (5-2).
'We had a lot more great chances that didn't get recorded in the stats, but it was a great team effort today,' said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. 'Defensively, I thought we played well. Ali Fennell was phenomenal for us for the second straight game.'
Edwards scored the first goal of the game at 28:35 on a header off a cross from the right side by junior Ali Fennell (Santa Ana/Mater Dei HS). The Golden Grizzlies scored on a similar play when Beth Howson scored the lone goal at 66:38 off a cross from Therese Bjorke.
After the 2-1 lead for the Women of Troy, Fodor put the match away at 88:05 on a free kick from 20 yards out.
It was the second straight game that USC has recorded three goals.
USC will play two straight road games against West Coast Conference opponents. The Trojans will play at St. Mary's on Wednesday (Sept. 26) at 3 p.m. and at Loyola Marymount on Sunday (Sept. 30) at 1 p.m.
