Volleyball Downs Idaho In Three Games

Sept. 24, 2001

SEATTLE - The Washington volleyball team avenged last year's loss to Idaho by sweeping the Vandals Monday night in three games, 30-16, 30-26, 30-21, in non-conference action at Bank of America Arena. With the win, the Huskies moved to 7-3 on the season, while the Vandals fell to 4-5.

UW senior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) led the Huskies in kills for the seventh time this season, knocking down 17 kills on 27 attempts for a match-high .593 hitting percentage. Freshman Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) added 10 kills, while junior setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) tallied 40 assists.

The Huskies outserved and outblocked the Vandals, as UW senior Britni Churnside (Eugene, Ore.) served a career-high five of her team's nine aces. Three Husky players, junior Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.), senior Lisa Underhilll (Vista, Calif.) and Richardson, all finished with five block assists.

In game one, the Huskies erased an early 0-2 deficit, tying the score at 2-2 and staying ahead for the rest of the game. The UW had a pair of 5-0 scoring runs to build up an easy 11-point advantage at 18-7. Idaho would come back on the next two plays with a pair of kills to get to within nine at 9-18, before the UW increased its lead and eventually won easily, 30-16.

Game two proved to be a different story as it was the Vandals who got out to the early lead, going up by as much as four points at 13-9 and 10-14. The Huskies, however, managed to stick close, tying the score at 19-19 and 20-20, before taking the lead on an Underhill kill off an overpass at 21-20. The two teams then battled back and forth as the game was tied at 23 and 24, before Churnside ripped two consecutive aces to give her team a 26-24 lead. A pair of kills and a block eventually gave the Huskies the first of two game points, as Richardson tallied the final kill at 30-26.

In game three, the two schools were tied nine times, before Washington put together a pair of three and four-point scoring runs to win the game and match with a 30-21 victory.

The Huskies hit the road Wednesday for two Pac-10 Conference matches Thursday at Oregon State and Friday at Oregon. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
