THIS WEEK: Washington State University's top cross country runners head to Minneapolis for the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday. The men's 8k race begins at 9 a.m. PT and features Pacific-10 Conference teams from Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, UCLA and Washington. Defending champion Providence, as well as teams from Wisconsin, Georgetown, and William & Mary, which all finished in the top 10 at last season's NCAA Championships, will also be challenging for the team title.
The women run a 6k course at 10 a.m. PT, where the Cougars will race against 34 other Division I teams. The Cougars will battle powers such as Georgetown, which placed fifth at the 2000 NCAA Championships, and the five aforementioned Pac-10 schools.
Detailed information on the meet can be found at http://www.gophersports.com/Griak/index.asp
WSU WOMEN: A team composed of seniors Ryan Gilmore, Jenny Filipy, April Gagner, juniors Everlyne Lagat, Anna Blue, and freshmen Molly Bull and Julia Corbett will compete for WSU in the Roy Griak. Last week, the Cougar women finished fourth at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, placing one spot better than Pac-10 rival Oregon. Lagat continued the fast start to her season, placing fourth, after winning her first meet as a Cougar. Also providing a boost for WSU, Gagner, the team's fifth runner placed 41st while running in her first meet in two years.
WSU MEN: The Washington State men, who have looked impressive in winning their first two meets of the year, will be represented by seniors Oscar Franco-Parra, Jon Welsh, Scott Johnson, juniors Kyle Barker, Mark Wicklander, sophomore Ian Johnson, and freshmen Mike Heidt and Danny Wolf. Last weekend, the Cougars won the Sundodger Invitational, edging out intrastate rival Washington by one point. Ian Johnson and Franco-Parra led the team placing second and third overall, respectively. Captain Welsh, who placed 10th at the Sundodger, will also be looking for a strong meet in Minnesota.
BIG CROSS INVITATIONAL: WSU is also taking a men's and women's team to the Big Cross Invitational in Pasco, Wash. Saturday. Senior Jacob Hazelquist, sophomores Kurt Hicks, Jim Neeway, Ryan Wieseler, and freshmen Mike Barbero, Justin Ireland and Jon Manthey represent the Cougar men. The women's team will be composed of junior Francine Bostian, sophomores Angelita Green, Hillary Smith, Emily Sodorff, Beth Welander, and freshmen Erin Bannan and Brittney Boysen. The women run 5,000 meters at 10 a.m., and the men's race begins at 10:45 a.m. on an 8,000 meter course, both at the Tri-Cities International Cross Country Course.
NEXT WEEK: The Cougars take a weekend to rest up, before heading to Greenville, S.C. for the Furman Pre-NCAA Invitational October 13.
