Eighth-Ranked UCLA Sweeps Third-Ranked Arizona Volleyball In L.A.
Sept. 28, 2001
TUCSON, Ariz.- The third-ranked Arizona volleyball team was swept by the high-powered and eighth-ranked UCLA Bruins in Pauley Pavilion, Friday night. The loss is the first of the season for the third-ranked Cats (7-1, 2-1 Pac-10) and is the first regular-season 3-0 loss since Nov. 13, 1999, when second-ranked Stanford pulled off a sweep in Maples Pavilion. Game scores of Friday night's match were 30-27, 30-27, 30-19.
Arizona, playing from behind for the majority of the match, could not overcome the power of UCLA's All-American senior Kristee Porter, who tallied a match-high 20 kills, and had trouble defending against the Bruins' serve, which racked up 10 aces on the night.
UCLA out-hit Arizona .368 to .292 in the match, including a dominating final game attack percentage of .571. The Bruins scored 57 kills to Arizona's 43.
Junior Shannon Torregrosa led the Wildcats with 14 kills on .258 hitting. Classmate Lisa Rutledge was the only other Arizona player to record double-digit kills, tallying 13 for the match. Senior Jill Talbot finished with nine kills on .643 hitting and also chipped in with a team-high eight digs and six assists.
Arizona will have to quickly forget the loss to Bruins, as they head across town Saturday for a meeting with fifth-ranked USC in the Lyon Center. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
A replay of the Arizona-UCLA match can be seen on Fox Sports Arizona at 10 a.m. on Saturday and again at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
