Women's Soccer Blanks Eastern Washington, 2-0
Sept. 28, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore Lindsey Beem scored a goal and assisted on another, as Oregon State University's women's soccer team shutout Eastern Washington 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
The Beavers improve to 6-1-1 on the season, their best start in program history since a 7-1 record to open the 1995 campaign.
Beem opened the scoring for the Oregon State in the closing minute of the first half, scoring at the 44:35 mark. OSU's Katie Henderson fired a shot at 44:32 that was just high and deflected off the crossbar, which set up Beem's header from four yards out to the right corner of the net.
'Lindsey was outstanding on the day,' commented OSU head coach Steve Fennah. 'She had a nice goal with the header and defensively played very well.'
Freshman Jillian Nicks gave the Beavers an insurance goal in the 60th minute, taking a pass from Beem and driving through a pair of defenders to fire a shot to the net from the top of the box. The goal was Nicks' third over the past four games.
Oregon State dominated the game both defensively and offensively, taking 30 shots in the match compared to just four by Eastern Washington.
Nineteen different players saw action for the Beavers on the afternoon.
'Overall it was a good day,' said Fennah. 'We wanted to keep things simple and keep the ball moving - it was a clean and tidy win.'
Oregon State returns to action Saturday against University of San Diego. The No. 19 ranked Toreros were shutout 3-0 at Oregon on Friday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
