Arizona Football Teleconference Quotes
Sept. 30, 2001
On Arizona's loss to Washington State:'Washington State really made the plays, and they were in the right places at the right times. The biggest thing for us was the first quarter. They had an interception returned for a touchdown, and then they had another interception that helped set up a touchdown. They hit us with a big pass on their first possession, and then they caught us off guard with the onside kick. When you add all of that up, they had us off guard right from the start.'
'We did close the gap to 28-21, but we made a lot of mistakes. We tried to get back in the game, but we didn't have enough going for us. Washington State had very good schemes with the run and the pass. Their defense pressured us and came right at us. Jason's (Johnson) throwing was a little off at times, and he was not as accurate. No one can afford to spot a team 28 points and expect to battle back to overcome the deficit. Our objective was to cut the lead to a touchdown by the end of the third quarter, but we were just unable to do that.'
'We had some good ideas offensively, but we didn't get to a bunch of them because we weren't in sync. We didn't fit everything together as well as we needed to. Defensively, when they ran the ball right at us, the defense held up, and we were able to get people around the ball.'
On Washington State's 18-play drive before halftime:'It was a good drive, and it did take the momentum from us. They made the statement that they were going to hold onto the ball, and that they were not going to give us an opportunity to get back in the game. That was good football on their part, and we just could not get the ball away from them.'
On Arizona's next opponent - Oregon:'You definitely can't start 0-2 in the conference if you expect to win the Pac-10. This week we are going to play the best team in the league. Oregon is talented, and they have a lot of confidence in what they are doing. We need to gather our forces and put our game plans together so that we can play well and stay in there.'
