Cougar Tennis Brings Home Three Singles Titles at Alabama Invitational

TUSCALOOSA -- The Washington State women's tennis team finished Sunday what it started Friday and Saturday in the 2001 Roberta Alison Fall Tennis Classic at the University of Alabama.

Led by sophomore Lorena Arias, who won a singles and doubles title, the Cougars won a tournament-best three singles titles to go with their two doubles titles from Saturday.

Arias won the 'C' Flight by defeating Auburn's Carolina Ramirez, 6-2, 6-2. Also victorious for the Cougars were freshmen Nora Gaal in Flight 'G' and Zsofi Fodor in Flight 'H.'

Gaal outlasted Stefanie Leung of Alabama, 7-6, (8-6), 6-4. Fofor beat Yumi Ueda from Mississippi State 6-2, 6-3

In the Flight 'A' championship, No.83 Stacy McKenna lost to No. 28 Sarah Borwell of Houston, 6-3, 6-3. WSU freshman Chris Martinez also took second in Flight 'D' after falling to Troy State's Louisa Lopez, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Saturday, McKenna teamed with senior Erica Perkins, the No. 27 combo in the country, to win the 'A' doubles championship, 8-4, over Houston's Borwell/Jen Baccarani duo. Perkins did not play singles due to a virus.

Arias joined Martinez to win the 'B' doubles championship Saturday. They defeated Troy State's Jayne Hutchinson/Sally Linden tandem, 8-4.

Eleven teams sent players to the tourney - Alabama, Arkansas State, Auburn, Auburn-Montgomery, Florida State, Houston, Louisiana-Monroe, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Troy State, and Washington State.

The Cougars' next competition is Oct. 11-13 at the BYU Invitational in Provo.
