WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Tailback DeShaun Foster of UCLA, defensive end Marcus
Hoover of Stanford and punter Derek McLaughlin of Washington have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.
Foster, a senior from Tustin, Calif., played a key role in UCLA's 38-7 win at No.
19-ranked Oregon State. The All-Pac-10 tailback carried 31 times for 147 yards and three touchdowns of 1, 3 and 17 yards. Foster keyed a Bruin attack that piled up 268 yards rushing and 496 yards total offense. He currently leads the Pac-10 in rushing at 128.0 yards per game.
Hoover, a senior from Philadelphia, Pa., was the Stanford defensive leader in the Cardinal's
21-16 upset win at USC. Hoover posted eight tackles, four unassisted, including two tackles for loss, one of which was a quarterback sack (-15), and one pass deflected. His quarterback sack occurred on USC's final possession with Stanford hanging on to a 21-16 lead. The Cardinal defense limited the Trojans to 13 first downs, just 28 yards rushing and 268 yards total offense.
McLaughlin, a freshman from Mesa, Ariz., played a major role with his punting in
Washington's 31-28 win at California. McLaughlin averaged 49.7 yards on seven punts. Included was a school-record 74-yard boot while punting out of the Husky endzone, which was returned for just one yard. He had another punt downed on the Cal 2-yard line.
Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were running back Dave Minnich of
Washington State and wide receivers Ryan Dennard of Arizona State, Luke Powell of Stanford and Paul Arnold of Washington. Also nominated on defense were linebacker Raonall Smith of Washington State, safeties Jason Stephens of UCLA and Alfred Williams of Arizona State and tackle Larry Tripplett of Washington. Punter Alan Cox of Washington State was nominated for special teams play.
