Robertson's 67 Guides UW Into Lead at Husky Invitational

Oct. 1, 2001

Bremerton, WA - Behind the play of junior John Robertson (Olympia) and senior Gordy Scutt (Victoria, BC), the Washington men's golf team took the lead after the first 36 holes of play at the Husky Invitational held at the Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex. The Huskies first-day total of 729 was seven strokes better than second-place Pepperdine. Washington State and Nevada are tied for fourth place at 739. The Husky Invitational scoring format features the top five scores from each team's six-man lineup.

Robertson tied the Olympic Course record with a opening round score of 67. He followed that up in the afternoon with a 71 for a 36-hole total of 6-under 138. Scutt shot 72 in the morning and followed that up with a 69 in the afternoon to fall into second place, three shots behind Robertson. Scutt's 69 was his third sub-70 round in his last four outings.

Robertson's score was his best as a collegiate in a tournament and allowed him to tie the Washington record for low first-round score.

Colorado's Ben Portie shot rounds of 73 and 69 to hold down third place with a 36-hole total of 142. Washington State's Ryan Camp and Oregon's John Ellis are tied for fourth at 143.

Robertson birdied the par-4 621-yard ninth hole to finish his front nine at even-par 36. After bogeying the 10th hole, Robertson went on a tear, notching five birdies and one eagle over his final eight holes to finish the back nine at 31.

'The front nine was just a bunch of pars with one birdie and one bogey,' Robertson said. 'I don't feel like I did anything really amazing on the back side. I hit a few good shots and made a few puts. I did a good job of giving myself 10 to 12 foot putts and I did a good job of making those.'

Robertson surprised himself with his eagle on the par-5, 515-yard 14th hole.

'I was just trying to get it close and it went in,' he said. 'It was more luck than talent. '

'That was one of the finest rounds of college golf I've ever seen,' said first-year Husky coach Matt Thurmond. 'This is a tough course with normal greens and normal conditions. Today, the wind was pretty gusty and the greens were really fast. The average score during the first round was just over 76, so John beat that by almost 10 strokes. That's really amazing.'

Washington's other scores included a 147 (77-70) by Brock Mackenzie, a 151 (76-75) by Conner Robbins, a 153 (75-78) by Corey Prugh and a 154 (77-77) by Dan Potter.

Washington has never won its fall invitational. The Huskies' best finish was a third-place showing last year when Pepperdine won the tournament.

The final round of the tournament will take place Tuesday at7:30 a.m.
