Scutt Leads UW to Husky Invitational Victory

Oct. 2, 2001

Bremerton, WA - Last week Washington senior Gordy Scutt broke out of a year-long slump by winning medalist honors at Idaho's Vandal Classic. At UW's own Husky Invitational Tuesday at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain, he proved that he is back to his old form.

Scutt posted a final-round score of 70 to win medalist honors and lead Washington to its first win at the event. Scutt finished with a 54-hole score of 5-under 211. That bettered his previous best 54-hole score by seven strokes.

'I was excited to get right back out and play again this week,' Scutt said. 'I wanted to see if last week's win was just a Cinderella story or if I was back for good.'

Scutt entered Tuesday's final round trailing teammate John Robertson by three strokes. Robertson posted scores of 67 and 71 on the opening day of play to take a three-stroke lead at 138. Scutt shot 72 and 69 during his first two rounds.

'I was concentrating on making birdies and having a steady round,' said Scutt, who was paired in a group just in front of Robertson. 'I didn't even know I was in contention until I finished and someone said John was having an off day.'

'Gordy is just one cool customer,' said first-year Husky coach Matt Thurmond. 'He did a great job throughout the tournament. This was a very tough course and he was the one person who tamed it.'

'I just tried to keep the ball in play and I did that today,' Scutt said. ' I thought I hit the ball really well. The key to shooting low rounds is to make the five-foot putts and I was able to do that both days. I can't really remember any putts outside of five feet that I missed.'

Robertson's hopes for his first tournament victory slipped when he shot 79 during the final 18 holes to fall back to a tie for fifth overall with a 1-over score of 217.

'I was disappointed in my round, but excited that we won the tournament,' Robertson said.

'We were all very happy to get Coach Thurmond his first win,' Scutt said of his first-year coach. 'Except for John and myself, no one else on the team has been a part of a tournament win. That is sort of hard for me to believe considering how much talent we have on this team.'

The Huskies posted four birdies on the par-4 18th hole to seal their victory with a final-round score of 370. Washington's 54-hole total of 1099 was seven strokes better than second-place Washington State, a team that had defeated the Huskies for top honors at last week's Vandal Classic.

Nevada, behind the play of Sprague Kolp placed third at 1109. Kolp tied California's Peter Tomasulo for second at 214. Oregon's John Ellis was fourth at 216.

Kolp turned in Tuesday's best round with a 5-under score of 67. That equaled Robertson's first-round score to tie the Olympic Course record. Kolp recorded four birdies on the front nine to post a 32. He then birdied 11, bogied 12, birdied 13 and had an eagle at the 515-yard par-5 14th hole to stand 7-under with four holes to play. Back-to-back bogies on 16 and 17 cost him a shot at a new course record. Kolp, who shot 72 and 75 during Monday's opening 36 holes of play, finished at 2-under 214.
