Swimming Kicks Off 70th Season With Oktoberfest Meet Saturday

SEATTLE - The Washington swimming team will begin the program's 70th season this Saturday, Oct. 6, with the annual intrasquad Oktoberfest meet at 8 a.m. in Husky Pool.

The meet will pit each Husky swimmer against one another, as each competitor will swim seven different events. Each swimmer will then be awarded points based on their finish in each event with the lowest point total at the end of the meet winning. Last year's champions, juniors Kim Harada (San Lorenzo, Calif.) and Matt Zielke (Renton, Wash.), both return to defend their titles.

The Huskies' Oktoberfest meet in the first of two intrasquad meets on this year's 2001-2002 schedule. The team's next competition, the Purple & Gold meet, will take place at Husky Pool on Saturday, October 13, at 10 a.m.

This year's 2001-2002 Washington swimming roster includes 19 freshmen and 23 Washington natives.
