Oct. 4, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - Four different Cardinal players tallied goals as No. 2 Stanford answered back from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat San Jose State 4-1 at Maloney Field Thursday evening.
The Cardinal (7-0-0) found themselves trailing for the first time this season when the Spartans (5-4-0) got on the board early in the first half on a goal by leading scorer Lars Lyssand at the 16:33 mark.
Stanford would then knot the game at 1-1 when sophomore Mike Wilson (Plimmerton, New Zealand) scored his second goal of the year by firing a bullet over the head of goalkeeper Daniel Benton, following an assist by Todd Dunivant (Wheat Ridge, Col.) in the 32nd minute. The Cardinal continued their offensive outburst by finding the net two more times before the end of the half. Senior Derek Shanahan (St. Charles, Ill.) angled a shot past the keeper on an assist from Dunivant at the 35:35 mark, and senior Lee Morrison (Carmichael, Calif.) took a header off a free kick in the 37th minute, following an assist by Abe Geiger (East Lansing, Mich.).
Freshman Aaron Maines (Falmouth, Maine) scored his first collegiate goal during the 65:52 mark of play, putting away a rebound into the open net on an assist from Roger Levesque (Portland, Maine) to round out the scoring.
The Cardinal outshot the Spartans 8-6, and Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Terris (Newton, Mass.) was once again solid in goal, notching two saves in the victory.
Stanford now looks ahead to Sunday, when it will face Saint Mary's in a non-conference matchup at Maloney Field at 2:30 p.m.
