Arizona Men's Tennis Splits Matches in the Prequalifying Tournament at the ITA All-American Championships

Tucson, Ariz. - The Arizona men's tennis team split its two singles matches today in the prequalifying round of the ITA All-American Championhips in Stone Mountain, Ga.
Sophomore Whi Kim, in his first action of the season, topped Vitek Wild of Bowling Green in two sets, 6-4 and 6-4. Fellow Wildcat, junior Tom Lloyd, playing in his first singles match of the season, fell to Chris Wettengel of the University of Minnesota in three sets, 6-0, 4-6 and 6-4.
Two other wildcat players, senior Steven Capriati and sophomore Carl Hagman are also participating in the ITA All-American Championships, which began Oct. 5. The event is scheduled to take place over the next two weekends.
Capriati and Hagman are scheduled to play singles on Oct. 9-10, in the qualifying tournament.
On the doubles side, the team of Capriati and Hagman are entered in the main draw, set for Oct. 11-14. The pair of Lloyd and Kim will make their season doubles debut in the prequalifying tournament, Oct. 6-8.
The ITA Men's All-American Championships will be held at the Lincoln Tennis Center at Stone Mountain, site of the 1996 Olympic tennis competition and last year's NCAA Women's Championships.
The ITA Men's All-American Championships features 15 of the top 20 players in the country. This tournament includes prequalifying and qualifying tournaments and doubles competitions. The men's championships, which is the nation's largest collegiate tennis tournament, has a 256-player prequalifying tournament Oct. 5-8 and 64-player qualifying tournament Oct. 9-10.
