Cardinal Capsule: Donald Sage
Oct. 5, 2001
Sport: Cross Country
Favorite Music Artist
It changes a lot, but I'd say right now it's Guns and Roses. We're into 80's hard rock right now.
Favorite Sports Team
I'd have to go with the Chicago Cubs.
Favorite Place To Hang Out
Our teams goes to dinner on Sunday nights at MexToGo's (in Menlo Park). They have all types of Mexican food. The burritos are good, and I usually get the steak fajitas.
I'd have to say this year, it's probably Economics. That's going to be my major, so I might as well like it.
Favorite TV Show
We always try to catch The Simpsons.
Favorite Professional Athlete
Walter Payton. He was really tough.
If You Could Play Another Sport At Stanford What Would It Be?
Definitely, basketball. I'm not in the sixth man club, but I really like basketball. It would be really fun to play in Maples. It's a great atmosophere.
Best Vacation Or Trip You've Ever Taken
I'd say it was when I went to Spain when I was younger. We went to Barcelona on a family vacation. I had a lot of fun there. It was really nice.
How Do You Prepare Before A Meet?
I try to get myself in the right frame of mind, so I can try to get ready to compete my best. I know I'm going to go through a lot of pain, and it's going to be tough, but I've got to just get myself to the state where I can push through it. Usually, I just put on my headphones and listen to the Rocky soundtrack or something.
The Best Thing About Being A Student-Athlete At Stanford
The people that I meet. My teammates are all really cool. I have fun travelling and competing with them.
Who's The Most Influential Person In Your Life?
Probably both my parents, and after that would be my high school coach Joe Newton.
What Made You Choose To Attend Stanford?
I thought the atmosophere on campus was that everyone seemed to be really into sports or whatever they do -- they want to do it well and have success at it. It seemed like the ideal place to be a student and an athlete.
What's Something About Yourself That Few People Know?
Athletically, I get really nervous and worried about my races. In high school, people just assumed that I just went out there and thought I was going to do all of this. It's not always like that.
Favorite Pre-Meet Meal
Most runners, myself included, like to eat pasta. It's got a lot of carbohydates. But also, this probably isn't the best, but I eat ice cream the night before the meet. I just like it.
Favorite Course That You've Ever Run On
Last year's nationals course was really cool, even though I didn't do too well. I like courses that have a lot of forest and woodsy areas with a lot of hills. That makes it more exciting and more fun to run. The course at last year's nationals at Iowa State was a lot like that.
What Do You Like Most About Sports?
I'm naturally a pretty competitive person. I just like being able to go out there and compete against people and try to do my best but still have fun with it. I always have fun when I'm playing sports.
Favorite Midnight Snack
Definitely, ice cream.
If You Had To Cook All Of Your Meals, What Would You Survive On?
Probably P&J. I basically have had that for lunch every day since I was like four or five. I pretty much do survive on it right now.
If You Were Going On A Road Trip And Could Take Only One CD, Which One Would You Take?
Appetite for Destruction (by Guns and Roses).
Favorite Actor Or Actress
Humphrey Bogart. Casablanca is my favorite movie ever.
If You Could Bring Anything From Your Hometown To Stanford, What Would You Bring?
I'd probably bring my TCBY (Yogurt Shop) with me. I used to know a lot of people who worked there.
What Do You See Yourself Doing 10 Years From Now?
I'd like to be still running. Right now, I do it and I don't get paid. If I could get paid to do it, that would be great.
If You Won $1 Million Dollars What Would You Do?
I'd probably invest it and try to live off the interest every year, so that I could get a job I really enjoy doing and not have to worry about money.
