Volleyball Drops Three-Game Match To #3 USC
Oct. 5, 2001
SEATTLE - USC freshman Keao Burdine had 11 kills to lead the third-ranked Trojans past Washington Friday in Pac-10 volleyball action, 30-28, 30-23, 30-17. With the loss, the Huskies dropped back-to-back matches for the first time this season, falling to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the Pac-10. The Trojans, meanwhile, won their ninth straight to improve to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
Washington was led by senior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) and freshman Vanessa Gilliam (Fairfield, Calif.), who each had 12 kills. Junior Elissa Ross (Spokane, Wash.) and freshman Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) also added 10 digs, while junior setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) had 37 assists.
The closest game of the match was the first, as Washington opened with an early 6-1 lead. The Trojans, caught off guard by the Huskies quick start, finally rallied to tie the score at 16-16 on a kill by Kelli Lantz. The two sides then remained very close, as the score was tied seven times, before a Husky service error gave USC a 28-27 advantage. Following a USC kill by Katie Olsovsky, the Huskies staved off one match point on a back row kill from Richardson, but were unable to save another, as a Jennifer Pahl kill ended the game in USC's favor, 30-28.
After a 23-30 loss in game two, the Huskies stuck with the Trojans early in game three, before USC went on a 8-0 run to make the score 15-5. The UW countered back with a four-point run of its own, but the Trojans regained the momentum, capturing the game and the match with a 30-17 win.
The Huskies hit the road for three Pac-10 Conference matches this week, beginning with a Monday match versus in-state rival Washington State at 5 p.m. in Pullman. The UW will then continue onto Arizona and Arizona State later in the week.
