Volleyball Falls to #5 UCLA
Oct. 5, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. - UCLA breezed past the Washington State volleyball team Friday night, 30-24, 30-21, 30-22, before an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd of 1,527 fans at Bohler Gym.
UCLA moves to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the Pacific-10 Conference action while WSU falls to 7-6 oveall, 2-4 league play.
The Bruins, ranked 5th nationally, had four players with double-figure kills. Kristee Porter and Lauren Fendrick each had 13 kills while Ashley Bowles and Angela Eckmier had 10 kills a piece. Fendrick led all players with 16 digs while Eckmier had seven blocks. UCLA hit .354 to WSU's .181 and out-blocked the Cougars 10 to 3.
LaToya Harris had 12 kills and 10 digs for the Cougars, the only WSU player with double-figures.
WSU never had the lead in any game, past the initial points.
'There's just no spark out there right now and no body playing with any kind of heart and you can't play this game without it,' Cougar Coach Cindy Fredrick lamented after the second loss to a top five team in two nights. 'I thought after last night we would come out with a lot more spirit than we did and a lot more wanting to take care of things. UCLA came in with a real different attitude, just a take care of business attitude and we're still playing not very smart volleyball right now.
'You get to a point where the coach can't do anymore and it has to be the players coming together and the players making up their mind that this is not an acceptable way to perform. And then do something about it. It breaks my heart because we are so much better than we are playing.
Washington State plays host for the third time in five days when the Washington Huskies (8-6 overall, 2-4 Pac-10) come to Pullman for a 5 p.m. Monday match.
