Huskies Fall Just Short in All-American Women's Tennis Qualifying
Oct. 7, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Washington sophomore Erin Hoe advanced to the qualifying round in both the singles and doubles competitions before losing Sunday in the All-American Women's Tennis Championships at UCLA.
Hoe won a pair of singles matches Saturday, defeating Temple's Danira Penic 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 in the first round and California's Carla Arguelles 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the second round.
On Sunday, Hoe lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to Saras Arasu of Duke. Hoe and junior Colleen Gray defeated the Texas tandem of Forney/Krinke 8-3 Sunday in second-round doubles before falling 8-3 to California's duo of Fusano/Havlicek.
This weekend's competition at UCLA was the pre-qualifying round of the All-American Championships. The top eight singles players and four doubles teams earned berths in Tuesday's qualifying tournament.
Washington's 64th-ranked junior Darija Klaic will compete in the qualifying bracket as will two UW doubles teams. Klaic teams with sophomore Clair Carter to form the nation's 17th-ranked doubles team. Husky seniors Ilona Kordonskaya and Erin Boisclair are rated No. 41.
Carter, who is ranked 20th nationally, is entered in the singles main draw that begins Oct. 11 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments, including the pre-qualifying that concluded Sunday. Eight singles competitors and four doubles teams advance from this week's qualifying round into the main draw.
Gray won a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Colorado's Kate Lutgert before losing in the second round Saturday to Alice Pirsu of Pennsylvania 6-3, 6-2.
Three Huskies were eliminated Saturday in first-round singles action. Boisclair lost 6-4, 7-6(5) to Jessica Rush of Northwestern, junior Andrea Coulter lost 6-4, 6-4 to Veronica Koksova of Pepperdine and Kordonskaya lost 6-2, 6-1 to Mira Radu of Mississippi.
The All-American Championships are the premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, featuring the top players in NCAA Division I tennis.
The Huskies are coming off their finest season ever after advancing to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament and finishing with a No. 11 ranking. Only one player has departed from that team, No. 1 singles Kristina Kraszewski who was a senior last season.
