Women's Soccer Improves Unbeaten Streak To Five Games

A penalty kick midway through the second half proved to be the differenceas the USC women's soccer team defeated San Diego State, 2-1, Sundayafternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck.
The win extended the Trojans' current unbeaten streak to five games as theyimproved to 5-3-1 on the year. The loss was the fifth straight for theAztecs, who saw their record drop to 4-7-0.
USC provided much of the offensive action early in the game and wererewarded for their efforts with a goal in the ninth minute. Midfielder AliFennell made along run down the right side and drew the Aztec defense towardher. Her ensuing cross found an unmarked Brittany Savelkoul eight yards outin front of goal, and she redirected the ball into the net.
The Aztecs countered early in the second half with a spectacular long-rangeeffort from senior Fay deLeon. After taking a pass from teammate MicheleWagner, deLeon fired a shot from 25 yards out to the left of goal thatfound its way into the upper right corner.
The deciding goal came as a result of a penalty kick awarded to the Trojanswhen Fennell was brought down in the box in the 65th minute. ForwardShannon Cross hit the penalty into the roof of the net to the right ofAztec keeper Linnea Quiï¿½ones for the game winner.
Quinones, who was credited with four saves on the day, made a pair ofdiving stops late in the contest to keep the Aztecs close, but they wereunable to find an equalizer. USC's Shaelyn Fernandes had to make just onesave while recording her fifth win of the season.
USC will open Pac-10 Conference play on Friday (Oct. 12) against Arizona State at McAlister Field at 3 p.m.
