PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The qualifying tournament for the Riviera Women's All-American Championships, the first of three national collegiate tennis championships this season, opens play Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Three rounds of prequalifying took place over the weekend at UCLA. Play now moves into the qualifying rounds where players (and doubles teams) must win three rounds in two days to advance to the Oct. 11-14 main draw.
The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera Women's All-American Championships (its counterpart, the ITA Men's All-American Championships, are taking place at the Lincoln Tennis Center at Stone Mountain (Ga.) this week), the Nov. 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events during the season.
The top five singles seeds in the qualifying tournament are (in order): senior Erica Perkins of Washington State, Katja Kovac of Baylor, Raquel Kops-Jones of California, Carolina Mayora of Kentucky and Sarah Borwell of Houston. Forty-seven of the 64 players in the qualifying tournament are ranked in the top 100 of the ITA's preseason rankings.
Sophomore Stacy McKenna will also play singles Tuesday and will team with Perkins in doubles action.
