Women's Golf In Fifth At OSU Shanico Invitational

Oct. 8, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - -

Ashlei Pendleton paced the Beavers with an even-par 72 on Monday to help OSU to fifth place after 18 holes of play in the OSU Shanico Invitational at the par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Club.

OSU's total of 298 put them three shots behind third-place Stanford and two back of BYU. California shot out to the lead with a 2-under par 286 on the strength of a 68 by Ria Quiazon and a 71 from Sarah Huarte.

Stanford's Kim Kowabunpat went out in 33 and came back in 34 to claim the lead with a 67.

Pendleton was on the verge of going well below par and joining the leaders, but she left a few birdie putts short and managed a rare 18 pars on the day. She will begin Tuesday's second round tied for seventh in the field of 97.

'She's striking the ball very well,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said of the junior from Las Vegas. 'Ashlei is on the verge of breaking through to sub-par rounds -she has a lot of confidence right now.'

Ferguson, a junior who played while recovering from an illness, birdied the 18th hole to cap off a 35 on the back nine and wrap up her lowest round of the year with a 73. Ferguson is tied for 12th.

Sophomore Marylyn Brand tied for 22nd after a steady 75 that saw her strike the ball well and hit greens consistently.

Freshman Alex Lucio, playing in her second career tournament, carded a 78 to tie for 46th while playing in the fifth position.

Laura Skinner, a sophomore in the number-one slot, signed for a 79 and is tied for 59th.

'They played very well today - Stacie and Ashlei especially,' Lakowske said. 'Marylyn hit the ball close to the hole all day, Alex had a good day, and Laura will tomorrow - she's an excellent player.

'Overall, it was a very good day. They stayed within themselves and stayed focused, and I think they'll use that to gain confidence.'

OSU is playing just its second tournament of the year and finished its third round overall. OSU's first tournament, The Mason Rudolph Championship, was cancelled after the events of Sept. 11, while the final round of the NCAA Fall Preview was cancelled due to rain.

The field will play 18 holes Tuesday and wrap up the tournament with 18 on Wednesday.
