Duck Women Sit Tied for 12th Heading into Final Round at OSU
Oct. 9, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kathy Cho shot a 74 as the Oregon women's golf team slid slightly from 11th place to 12th place after the second round of the OSU/Shanico Invitational, played Tuesday at the 6,072-yard, par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Course.
After matching her career low with a 73 on Monday, Cho, a senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, shot a plus-2 Tuesday and stands tied for 12th place overall at 3-over. Cho will be trying for the best finish of her career when the final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Her highest finish at Oregon currently is a tie for 19th at the 2001 Hawaii Fall Classic.
'Kathy has played with a great deal of experience and maturity over the past two days,' said Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard. 'It's even more evident than last year.'
The Ducks scored a 311 as a team Tuesday, two more strokes than Monday, and stand 12th at 620. Arizona jumped into the second round lead at 577 by shooting a 288. First round leader California fell seven strokes off the pace at 584 after a 298 Tuesday. Stanford was third at 591, followed by Brigham Young at 595, Washington at 596, Oregon State at 600, New Mexico at 601, San Francisco at 602, Idaho at 605, Long Beach State at 614 and Nevada-Las Vegas immediately in front of Oregon at 615.
Freshmen Johnna Nealy and Jess Carlyon struggled a bit Tuesday. Nealy shot a 79 and is tied for 46th at 155, while Carlyon shot a 78 and is tied for 52nd at 156.
'We're giving away too many shots around the greens right now,' said Rouillard. 'We'll try to do a better job of that tomorrow, but that's something you correct with experience. We need to identify the problems we are having and take that experience from this tournament and learn from it.'
Arizona's Lorena Ochoa fired a 5-under 67 to tie Stanford's Kim Kouwabunpat for the individual lead at 139 going into the final round. Kouwabunpat had an even par 72 Tuesday.
