Men Golfers Tie for Fifth at Pepperdine

Oct. 9, 2001

SOMIS, Calif. - John Ellis had a 1-over 73 Tuesday to help Oregon finish in a tie for fifth at the Pepperdine Club Glove Intercollegiate, played at the 6,884-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club. It was the third straight top-five finish of the fall for the Ducks.

Ellis finished the tournament tied for seventh with California's Peter Tomasulo at plus-5. Chris Carnahan tied for ninth at 222 after shooting an even-par 72 Tuesday. Aaron Byers tied for 33rd at 229.

'Ellis and Carnahan played quite well,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'But it's a team sport and the other three guys just couldn't get it going today. I'm disappointed with it, they're disappointed with it, but sometimes that's the way it goes.'

In the team competition, Pepperdine cruised to a 17 stroke victory at 874. Fresno State was second at 891, followed by Colorado State at 899, San Diego State at 902 and three teams - Oregon, California and Alabama-Birmingham - tied for fifth at 905.

'The thing that's really frustrating is that with even an average round, we could have easily grabbed third place,' said Nosler. 'We didn't get the job done. But we have one more tournament this fall and we will rebound. I have no doubt about that.'

Pepperdine had five golfers in the top nine, including tournament champion Jason Allred, who finished at 216. Fresno State's Jonathan Echols was second at 218, while Pepperdine's Randy Creighton was third at 219 and the Waves' Brandon White and Kelly Craig tied for fourth at 220.

Oregon concludes the fall schedule at the Nov. 5-6 Prestiege at Palm Desert in California.
