Beavers Beat Oregon In Civil War Volleyball
Oct. 10, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gina Schmidt recorded her 11th double-double of the year as the Oregon State volleyball team handed Oregon a 3-1 loss in the Civil War, presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers, at Gill Coliseum on Wednesday. Scores were 30-25, 23-30, 30-18 and 30-21.
Schmidt led the Beavers (11-4, 5-2 Pacific-10) with a match-high 15 kills while hitting .306. With her seventh kill of the night, she moved into fourth place on OSU's career kills list and now has 1208. Schmidt tacked on 11 digs to finish with a double-double and needs just 10 more digs to reach the 1,000 digs mark.
Michele Solomon also had a strong outing, hitting .458 with 13 kills and four blocks, while Allison Lawrence shined off the bench by tying her career-high with eight kills to go along with a .429 hitting percentage.
'We did what we needed to do,' said coach Nancy Somera. '(After losing game two) we made some adjustments on the block and were able to dig their outside hitters without a big block. We were looking at this as a match we needed to win.'
The Beavers once again continued their defensive dominance by outdigging the Ducks, 74-54. Joining Schmidt in double figures were Nikki Neuburger and Laura Collins. Neuburger had a match-high 16, just one off her career-high, while Collins set a new career-high with 14. Her previous best of 13 digs came in OSU's last match.
'A couple weeks ago we were talking to (Collins) about needing to get some more digs. The last couple matches she's had double figures, and she just keeps upping her numbers,' Somera said.
OSU won every statistical matchup, with the exception of blocking. The Beavers had 60 kills and hit .200, while Oregon had 49 kills and hit just .149. OSU also six aces to UO's five, but the Ducks outblock the Beavers, 13-7.
Stephanie Martin led the Ducks (8-8, 0-7) with 15 kills and had a match-high eight blocks, while Lindsay Closs had 11 kills and four blocks for Oregon.
