Ducks Fall To Beavers In Four Games

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gina Schmidt recorded her 11th double-double ofthe year as the Oregon State volleyball team handed Oregon a 3-1 loss in theCivil War, presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers, at Gill Coliseum onWednesday. Scores were 30-25, 23-30, 30-18 and 30-21.
Schmidt led the Beavers (11-4, 5-2 Pacific-10) with a match-high 15kills while hitting .306. With her seventh kill of the night, she moved intofourth place on OSU's career kills list and now has 1208. Schmidt tacked on11 digs to finish with a double-double and needs just 10 more digs to reachthe 1,000 digs mark.
Michele Solomon also had a strong outing, hitting .458 with 13 killsand four blocks, while Allison Lawrence shined off the bench by tying hercareer-high with eight kills to go along with a .429 hitting percentage.
'We did what we needed to do,' said coach Nancy Somera. '(Afterlosing game two) we made some adjustments on the block and were able to digtheir outside hitters without a big block. We were looking at this as amatch we needed to win.'
The Beavers once again continued their defensive dominance byoutdigging the Ducks, 74-54. Joining Schmidt in double figures were NikkiNeuburger and Laura Collins. Neuburger had a match-high 16, just one off hercareer-high, while Collins set a new career-high with 14. Her previous bestof 13 digs came in OSU's last match.
'A couple weeks ago we were talking to (Collins) about needing toget some more digs. The last couple matches she's had double figures, andshe just keeps upping her numbers,' Somera said.
OSU won every statistical matchup, with the exception of blocking.The Beavers had 60 kills and hit .200, while Oregon had 49 kills and hitjust .149. OSU also six aces to UO's five, but the Ducks outblock theBeavers, 13-7.
