Ducks Finish 12th at OSU/Shanico Invitational
Oct. 10, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's golf team neither gained ground nor lost ground and finished 12th, the same position the Ducks' began the day in, after the final round of the OSU/Shanico Invitational, which was played in a pouring rain Wednesday at the 6,072-yard, par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Course.
Kathy Cho was the Ducks' high finisher, tying for 21st at 227, but she struggled to an 80 Wednesday. Still, is was the highest finish for the senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, since tying for 19th at last year's Hawaii Fall Golf Classic.
Freshman Johnna Nealy and sophomore Lacy Erickson led Oregon with 74s Wednesday. Nealy was the only other Duck in the top 50, finishing the tournament tied for 37th at 231.
'Johnna and Lacy played well, especially considering the conditions,' said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard. 'It basically poured on us for 15 holes. But mentally, we need to become tougher under these conditions. We need to be aware that other teams are going to slip and present us with the opportunity to move up, as opposed to the other way around.'
California and Arizona tied for the team title at 882 at the end of 36 holes and the Golden Bears were declared the winner based on having a better fifth-player score in round three than the Wildcats. Stanford was third with an 882, followed by Washington at 897, San Francisco at 903, Brigham Young at 907, New Mexico at 908, Oregon State at 912, Idaho at 914, Nevada-Las Vegas at 927, Long Beach State at 930 and Oregon at 932.
'We have a lot of work to do and that's the bottom line,' said Rouillard. 'We'll keep refining our short game this week and work on a few other things, but we'll get there.'
Arizona's Lorena Ochoa fired a 5-under 67 Wednesday to run away with the individual title at 10-under 206. Ochoa had one of only three sub-par rounds in the final round. Three golfers tied for second at 215, including California's Anne Walker and Sarah Huarte and Stanford's Kim Kouwabunpat.
