Women's Basketball Tips Off Season With Midnight Madness Oct. 12

BERKELEY - The California women's basketball team officially begins practice with Midnight Madness Friday, Oct. 12, at Haas Pavilion. Doors to Haas open at 10:30 p.m., and fans will be treated to plenty of entertainment and contests leading up to 12:01 a.m. when the Bears will take to the court for the first time.
Fans can also get acquainted with the Cal women's basketball team at Meet The Bears Day, Sat., Nov. 10, at Haas Pavilion. Festivities run from 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and include watching the Bears practice, a fundamental skills clinic for students 12th grade and under and an autograph session.
Head Coach Caren Horstmeyer welcomes back one returning starter and six letterwinners for her second season at the helm of the Golden Bears. Her 2001-02 team also features one redshirt and eight newcomers.
Horstmeyer led the Bears to a 12-16 overall record and an 8-10 Pac-10 mark in her inaugural season. The Bears' eight Pac-10 wins was the most by the Cal program since 1992-93.
The 2000-01 season saw Cal win five-straight conference games for the first time since 1986-87. During that stretch, the Bears also ended 15-game losing streaks to Stanford and Oregon and earned the program's first road sweep of UCLA and USC.
The Bears' only returning starter is senior center/forward Ami Forney. She is Cal's top returner for points (10.0 ppg), rebounds (7.9 rpg), blocks (0.6 bpg) and field goal percentage (.481). The product of nearby Newark, Calif., finished fourth in the Pac-10 for rebounding last year and paced the conference with 3.15 offensive rebounds per game.
The Bears welcome eight newcomers this season. The guards are freshmen Nicol Berry (5-7), Kristin Iwanaga (5-6) and Jackie Lord (5-8), and sophomore Morgan Romine (5-8). Up front, Cal features freshmen forwards Khadijah Coakley (6-1), Leigh Gregory (6-0) and Alisa Lewis (5-11), and sophomore center Olga Volkova (6-4).
Cal plays the first of two exhibition games Sun., Nov. 4, against a Bay Area Pro-Am team at 2 p.m., at Haas Pavilion. The Bears open the regular season at home Sun., Nov. 18, against San Diego State.
