Women's Tennis Rolls On At Riviera Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Three of four Cardinal women entered in the main draw of this weekend's Riviera Women's All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades won their first round singles matches Thursday afternoon.
Senior Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.), ranked No. 2 nationally and the No. 2 seed in the tournament, defeated Darija Klaic of Washington 6-3, 6-4 in Thursday's action. Senior Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nv.) edged Georgia's Anne Nguyen 7-6 (5), 7-5 and freshman Erin Burdette (Ojai, Calif.) breezed past Alison Ojeda of Tennessee 6-2, 6-0. Lastra is ranked No. 10 nationally in the preseason rankings after finishing 34-6 overall last spring and Burdette, ranked No. 93, won her fourth consecutive match of the season for the Cardinal.
Sophomore Lauren Barnikow (Clifton, N.J.) saw her tournament run come to an end, as she fell to Florida's Jessica Lehnhoff, the tournament's No. 6 seed, 6-3, 6-4.
Singles competition continues again Friday, as the following Cardinal women will be in action: Kalvaria battles Duke's Kelly McCain, Lastra will face Duke's Amanda Johnson, tournament's No. 7 seed, and Burdette goes for her fifth win in a row against Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion.
