PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Three Stanford women entered in the main draw of this weekend's Riviera Women's All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades were eliminated Friday morning in second round matches.
Senior Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.), ranked No. 2 nationally and the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament, was upset by Duke's Kelly McCain 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2. Two other Cardinal women in action also fell Friday: senior Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nv.) dropped a tough three-set match to Amanda Johnson of Duke 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and freshman Erin Burdette (Ojai, Calif.) was ousted by Old Dominion's Nataly Cahana 6-2, 6-3.
Lastra, ranked No. 10 nationally in the preseason, won her first round match Thursday and Burdette was aiming for her fifth consecutive victory in her first collegiate tournament.
Sophomore Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, N.J.) defeated USC's Jewel Preston 6-4, 6-0 in a first round consolation match, then withdrew due to an injury in her second round contest.
The Cardinal fared better in doubles, with both teams entered advancing to the second round. Stanford's tandem of Kalvaria and Lastra defeated Duke's Julie DeRoo and Kelly McCain 8-3 in the first round and are trying to become the first duo to repeat as doubles champions at the tournament. The Cardinal duo of Barnikow and Burdette also recorded a victory, edging Erica Fisk and Monica Rincon of Ohio State 8-5 on Thursday night. Both teams were scheduled to be in action later this evening.
