Men's Soccer Takes No. 7 Washington To The Wire Before Falling 2-1 In Seattle
Oct. 13, 2001
SEATTLE, Wash. - -
Oregon State took seventh-ranked Washington down to the wire on Saturday night before falling 2-1 in both teams' Pacific-10 Conference men's soccer opener in Seattle.
With three ticks left on the clock in the first half, sophomore Ross Duncan controlled a loose ball and put it in the back of the net after a Chad Bartlome shot deflected off the cross bar. Duncan's second score of the season drew the Beavers (3-6-0 overall, 0-1-0 Pac-10) even at 1-1after UW got a score from Jake Sagare at 19:51 off a corner kick to open the scoring.
Benjamin Somoza capitlized on a penalty kick at 48:33 to give the Huskies (9-1-0, 1-0-0) the advantage, which they held on to for the narrow 2-1 win.
OSU head coach Dana Taylor was pleased with what he called his team's best performance of the season.
'I'm very, very happy with the way we played tonight,' Taylor said. 'We had great energy from all the players involved, Ross Duncan scored a great goal.'
'Overall, the team played very well, they played composed, kept the ball on the ground, and moved it well,' Taylor said. 'For Washington being (seventh) in the nation, we actually had the ball a lot tonight, but we were a little unlucky.'
OSU poured on a flurry of shots late in the game, with four tries from within 18 yard hitting goalkeeper Chad Olsen.
OSU again got outstanding play in goal, as sophomore keeper Peter Billmeyer stopped 10 shots for the second game in a row to bring his season total to 49 and move into third on OSU's all-time saves list.
The Beavers played Washington nearly even in several aspects of the game, including shots, where OSU kept the pressure up with 18 while Washington totaled 21.
'Everybody on the team knows we played well,' Taylor commented. 'This was a very good team effort tonight. I'd say this was the best overall team performance of the year. Now we get ready for next weekend - there are no easy games on the schedule.'
OSU plays host to Western Washington on Friday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m., then takes on UCLA on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 12 noon.
