Volleyball Takes No. 7 Arizona To The Limit In Five-Game Loss

SEATTLE - After falling behind two games to none, the Washington volleyball team nearly pulled off an upset, falling to No. 7 Arizona in five games, 30-20, 30-15, 32-34, 28-30, 15-13, Saturday evening at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 9-8 overall and 3-6 in the Pac-10, while the Wildcats improved to 11-3 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
Washington senior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) led the Husky offense, tallying 19 kills on 54 attempts, while freshman Vanessa Gilliam (Fairfield, Calif.) contributed 11 kills in the loss. Defensive specialists senior Britni Churnside (Eugene, Ore.) and junior Elissa Ross (Spokane, Wash.) each had 10 digs apiece, while junior Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) had 49 assists.
The Huskies recovered from a pair of sub-.100 hitting performances in the first two games, to win the next two games by two points each. Arizona then hit .286 in the fifth and deciding game, to squeak by with a 15-13 win.
Arizona's Jill Talbot and Lisa Rutledge had 24 and 23 kills respectively, as the Wildcats had a sizeable advantage in nearly every statistical category, including service aces (8-0).
The Washington volleyball team returns home Tuesday for its final non-conference match of the season against Portland at 7 p.m., in Bank of America Arena. The Huskies then hit the road again for another pair of Pac-10 matches at California and No. 4 Stanford, October 19-20.
