The Facts
The No. 3 USC women's volleyball team (12-1, 7-0 Pac-10) hosts No. 14 Pepperdine (10-2, 5-0 WCC) this Tuesday (Oct. 16) then travels to No. 5 UCLA (10-3, 5-2 Pac-10) on Friday (Oct. 19). The match against the Waves will be played in the Lyon Center and begins at 7 p.m. Friday's match will be played at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion at 7 p.m. The Women of Troy -- on an 11-match winning streak -- are coming off two Pac-10 wins with a 28-30, 30-28, 30-22, 30-26 victory over fourth-ranked Stanford on Oct. 12 to move into first place in the Pac-10 and a 30-25, 30-26, 30-19 win over Cal on Oct. 20.

The Rankings
Even with wins over No. 4 Stanford and Cal, USC remains No. 3 in this week's USA Today/AVCA Coaches poll and the Volleyball magazine poll. Long Beach State and Nebraska, both of whom USC will not face in the regular season, hold onto the No. 1 and 2 spots on the charts.

Olsovsky Named Pac-10 and AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week
Middle blocker Katie Olsovsky has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week and AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week for Oct. 8-14. Olsovsky led the Trojans in two wins over Stanford (Oct. 12) and Cal (Oct. 13), hitting a combined .667 with 21 kills (3.00 kpg), 18 digs (2.57 dpg) and seven blocks (1.00 bpg). Her .667 attack percentage included just one error in 30 attempts in seven games. Against the Cardinal, Olsovsky recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. She followed that performance by hitting .733 (11-0-15) against Cal - a mark which ranks fifth among USC individual match records. She currently ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in blocks, averaging 1.28 blocks per outing. This is the second Pac-10 weekly honor of Olsovsky's career, USC's 26th honor all-time.

Olsovksy is only the third athlete in USC women's volleyball history to earn National Player of the Week honors. The Trojans' first was Jasmina Marinkovic, who was honored the week of Sept. 22, 1997. April Ross received the honor last season for the week of Nov. 13, 2000.

Recent Matches
vs. No. 4 Stanford
-- In a battle of the undefeated, USC came back after dropping the first game to beat fourth-ranked Stanford 3-1 (28-30, 30-28, 30-22, 30-26) in front of a sellout crowd of 1205 at the Lyon Center on Friday (Oct. 12). With the victory, the Women of Troy took sole possession of first place in the conference race. It was a match decided in the back row as the Cardinal won the hitting (.278 to .274) and blocking (12.0 to 8.0) battle, but succumbed to a Women of Troy defense which collected 61 digs compared to Stanford's 42. The Trojans also tallied nine points off of service aces thanks to the efforts of Nicole Davis, who contributed a career-high seven, just one shy of the USC record. The Women of Troy finished with four players in double figure kills and four in double figure digs, including double-double performances from April Ross (20 kills, 13 digs), Keao Burdine (20 kills, 11 digs) and Katie Olsovsky (10 kills, 10 digs). Olsovsky and Lauren Killian each added five blocks.

vs. Cal -- USC notched its 11th-consecutive victory of the season with a 3-0 win over Cal on Saturday (Oct. 13) in front of 638 at the Lyon Center. Katie Olsovsky led the Trojans with a career-high .733 (11-0-15) attack effort - a mark that ranks fifth among USC individual match records. Four Trojans finished with double digits in kills, including April Ross who added 13. Keao Burdine tallied 12 digs while Nicole Davis tied a career-best with 11 digs of her own. As a team, USC hit at a .319 (65-22-135) clip and held the Bears to .168 (37-17-119). While out-digging Cal 57 to 38, the Women of Troy were nearly matched at the net as Cal posted 3.0 blocks to the Trojans' 4.0.

USC Sets Home Match Win Streak
With its win over UCLA on Sept. 21, USC set a new record for consecutive home victories. To date, the Trojans have won 24 consecutive matches at home, starting with a 3-0 win over Rhode Island on Sept. 6, 2000. USC's previous record was 19 straight home wins set between Sept. 25, 1976, and Oct. 19, 1978.

Game Win Streak Broken
Against Stanford on Oct. 12, the Women of Troy dropped the first game 30-28, their first game loss since losing the deciding game to No. 7 Wisconsin on Sept. 2. Prior to Stanford, USC had won nine consecutive matches by 3-0 scores (27 straight game victories). Last season, the Trojans set the all-time program record by winning 38 straight games to begin the season.

Lexus Gauntlet Challenge
By capturing the first win in the home-and-home series with the Bruins on Sept. 21, USC volleyball also earned the Trojans' first five points in the Lexus Gauntlet Challenge between the two crosstown rivals. This unique program will award points for the winner of each Bruin-Trojan head-to-head athletic contest throughout the year and the Lexus Gauntlet trophy will be awarded to the school with the most points at year's end. Volleyball has the opportunity to capture all 10 points and win the season series with a victory against the Bruins this week.

Trojans Find Ace In Davis
Defensive specialist Nicole Davis has a killer serve... and no team knows that better than Stanford. Davis collected seven service aces against the Cardinal, including six in the first two games. The mark falls just one ace shy of the USC record and ranks Davis' performances fifth in the record books (there is a four-way tie for first place with eight aces in a match). On the year, Davis has 15 aces.

Common Connections
UCLA defensive specialist Chrissie Zartman and USC setter Tracy Lindquist were junior partners on the beach volleyball circuit. Together they won five AAU Pro Beach Championships and became the youngest players to ever receive an AAA beach volleyball rating. UCLA outside hitter Ashley Bowles and USC defensive specialist Kristen Anderson are both graduates of Mira Coast High in Manhattan Beach, Calif. (Bowles graduated in 1998, Anderson in 2001).

Assist Leader(s)
USC ranks seventh nationally (as of Oct. 8) and leads the Pac-10 in assist average (16.26 apg), but the Women of Troy don't have a setter ranked in the Top 25 nationally or even among the Top 5 in the Pac-10. This is because USC uses two setters. Running a 6-2 offense, the Trojans boast the talent of both Toni Anderson and Tracy Lindquist. The two see equal time on the court and, while they sacrifice individual accolades, together they lead the nation's No. 3 team. Anderson and Lindquist average 8.30 and 6.42 assists per game, respectively.

A Scoring Leader?
This season's change to rally scoring has also introduced a new category of stats. Now every kill, block and ace will not only earn a team a point, but the responsible player gets a point as well (just as a basketball player contributes 20 points in a game). The formula is as follows:
points = kills + service aces + solo blocks + 1/2 block assists.

For example, April Ross leads the team with a total of 188.0 points this season (she has accumulated 170 kills, five aces, two block solos and 22 block assists). She averages 4.48 points per game and 14.46 points per match.

Stopping the Attack
USC has held opponents this season to a .150 average attack percentage. Arizona and Stanford are the only opponents this season to hit above .200 when the Wildcats managed to hit .305 on Sept. 29 and the Cardinal hit .278 on Oct. 12. The Trojans dominate at the net overall by out-hitting opponents .318 to .150 (17.86 to 13.49 kills per game), out-blocking opponents by a 1.31 margin and forcing 7.3 opponent attack errors per game. USC leads the league in attack percentage and opponent attack percentage.

**The Trojans also lead the Pac-10 conference in assists (16.26 apg), kills (17.86 kpg) and won-lost percentage (.923).**
