Bruin Cross Country Squads to Compete at Cal State Fullerton Invitational

Oct. 16, 2001

This Friday, Oct. 19, the UCLACross Country teams will compete at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational held at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, CA. The women's 5K race will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 5:00 p.m.

The women's contingent will consist of Lena Nilsson, Tiffany Burgess, Carmen Winant, Kelly Grimes, Julia Barbour and Christine Atkins. Alejandra Barrientos, Elaine Canchola and Valerie Flores will not compete on Friday. This will be the first cross country race of Lena Nilsson's Bruin career. 'Nilsson has looked as if she could be a factor in the top five of our runners. One or two more races will help her to improve,' said Peterson. 'At this weekend's race, we are hoping to determine who our seventh runner will be for Pac-10s among Nilsson, Burgess and Winant.'

The men will run a full team of 10 competitors, consisting of Ben Aragon, Brian Bauerle, Martin Brix, Robert Kubler, Puneet Mahan, Seth Neumuller, Reggie Oronoz, Justin Patananan, Andrew Wulf and Phil Young. Bryan Green will not compete in this weekend's race. 'The men are using this race as an opportunity to tune up for Pac-10s,' said Peterson. 'We ran a better race at the Arizona State Invitational than we did at the Griak Invitational. One more race will put us at a better position and raise our confidence as we prepare for the post season.'

At last weekend's NCAA Preview Meet, held in Greenville, SC and hosted by Furman University, UCLA's women placed seventh in its seeded division with 266 points. The Bruins' top runner was freshman Barrientos, who placed 36th in 22:09. Canchola placed 37th in 22:10. Green was the lone men's competitor, running in the Furman Invitational men's race. Green placed 15th in 25:53.

Looking ahead, the Bruins will compete at the Pac-10 Championships, held in Tempe, AZ, Saturday, Oct. 27
