Oct. 18, 2001
EUGENE - Arizona State and the University of Oregon had just one Pac-10 volleyball win between them heading into their match Thursday evening. Both teams were looking to end their respective losing streaks as the second half of the conference began. The Sun Devils handed Oregon a 30-15, 30-24, 30-16 loss in front of 576 fans at McArthur Court Thursday to end their six-match losing streak and improve to 6-9 overall, 2-6 Pacific-10 Conference. Oregon is 8-10, 0-8.
'Arizona State's biggest strength is their defense,' Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. 'We needed to dominate the net, but we didn't do that and they had their way. They are a team that generates offense off of their strong defensive play and we had too many unforced errors.'
Both teams committed nine service errors, but Arizona State had just 10 attack errors to Oregon's 19 and finished the match with a .404 hitting percentage. Oregon junior Stephanie Martin led the Ducks with 10 kills, six digs and two blocks, while hitting a team-high .261.
Three Sun Devil players had 10 or more kills led by Kim Melhorn's match-high 16 kills. Julia Leddy had 15 kills and committed zero errors in 19 attempts to finish with a career-high .789 hitting percentage. Senior Jami Coughlin had the night's only double-double (11 kills, 15 digs).
Oregon senior Monique Tobbagi had nine kills and led the Ducks defensively with 13 digs.
The match will be rebroadcast on Fox Sports Net on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
