UCLA Swimming Begins Season Friday
Oct. 18, 2001
This Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, the Bruins will travel to Santa Barbara, CA, to face off against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and the Oregon State Beavers. The meet will be held at Campus Pool and will begin at 1:00pm.
The Bruins are returning to action after a successful season. In 2001, UCLA claimed the Pac-10 title, its first Pac-10 championship ever. The Bruins return a veteran squad, led by seniors Lyndee Hovsepian, Emily Melina, Jen Noddle, Geraldine Schick, Erin Thomas, Janet Worthington and Katie Younglove. Also returning for the Bruins will be juniors Beth Boehm, LeAnne Cadag, Erica Shugart and Erin Zehntner. The Bruins will also look to sophomores Sara Platzer, Brooke Winkler and Naoko Watanabe to provide leadership in the pool this season.
UCLA's incoming freshman class is expected to make an impact this season. The Bruins have an outstanding incoming class, consisting of National qualifiers and European champions. The Bruins will also be strengthened by a solid group of transfers.
Last season, the Bruins defeated the Gauchos 174-79, and lead the series 17-0. The Gauchos finished the 2000-2001 season by capturing the Big West conference title.
Friday's meet will be the first time that the Bruins face the Oregon State Beavers. Last season, the Beavers ended with an overall record of 7-3, finishing ninth at the Pac-10 Championships.
Looking ahead, the Bruins will compete at the Southern Methodist University Classic in Dallas, TX from November 2-3. The first home meet will be Wednesday, January 9, 2002, against the University of Illinois.
