The Cardinal recently competed in the Riviera All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades, Calif. Sophomore Barnikow (Woodbridge, N.J.) and freshman Burdette (Jackson, Ga.), ranked Nos. 73 and 93 respectively, each won four singles matches during their tournament run. Senior Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.), the Cardinal's top singles threat and ranked No. 2 nationally, was upset by Duke's Kelly McCain in the second round and finished 1-1 over the weekend. No. 10 Lastra (Reno, Nev.) was also eliminated after winning her first round match and senior Tokuda (Clifton, N.J.)- ranked No. 30 in the preseason poll- posted a 2-1 mark in three qualifying matches.
Also at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships on the doubles side, Stanford's tandem of Barnikow and Burdette, ranked No. 16 nationally, coasted past their first four opponents before eventually falling to Fresno State's Kim Niggemeyer and Simone Jardim- the No. 1 team in the country. Barnikow and Burdette, who also reached the finals of the 2000 Australian Junior Open, went 4-1 in the tournament. The Cardinal's top team of Kalvaria and Lastra, ranked No. 7 in the preseason, advanced to the semifinals and finished 2-1 in tournament action.
The singles finalists and doubles champions from the Omni Hotels Western Regional Championships advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held November 8-11 at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
