Oct. 19, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gina Schmidt and Michele Solomon reached two milestone marks as the Oregon State volleyball team defeated Arizona State in a three-game sweep at Gill Coliseum on Friday night. Game scores were 30-22, 30-21 and 30-27.
The win marks the first time since 1996 that the Beavers (13-4, 6-2 Pacific-10) have defeated the Sun Devils (6-10, 2-7) twice in the same season.
'It was a total team effort. We had a pretty even offensive distribution. When you look at the stats, everyone had about the same number of attempts,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'We passed well and used our quickness and athleticism.'
Schmidt led the Beavers with 14 kills and tied for the team lead with 11 digs en route to recording her 1,000th career dig, while Solomon had six blocks to become the eighth Beaver with 300 career blocks. Schmidt is the ninth Beaver with 1,000 career digs and the fifth Beaver to pick up 1,000 career digs and 1,000 career kills.
Megan McMillan had another big match against ASU, picking up 12 kills while hitting a career-high .579. She hit .500 with a career-high 13 kills in the win over the Sun Devils earlier this season. 'Megan played great. She was huge in the first match against them, so we knew she'd be ready. She hit .579, which is exceptional. She had a nice night,' Somera said.
The Beavers continued their string of outdigging the opposition, although ASU made it close. OSU had 56 digs to ASU's 54, with three Beavers leading the way with 11 apiece. Joining Schmidt with 11 digs were Nikki Neuburger and Laura Collins.
OSU finished the night with a .254 hitting percentage and 53 kills to ASU's .119 mark and 41 kills. The Beavers also outblocked ASU, 10-6. ASU did win the serving match-up, serving four aces to OSU's three. Jessica Papell had all three aces for the Beavers.
The Sun Devils were by Kim Melhorn, who finished with team-highs of 10 kills and 11 digs.
