Oct. 22, 2001

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Junior safety Alfred Williams was named Pac-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday.

Williams, a 2000 honorable-mention All-Pac-10 selection from Irvine, Calif., played a key role in Arizona State's 41-24 win against Oregon State last week at Sun Devil Stadium. He had eight tackles, six unassisted, including one tackle for loss as the Sun Devils limited the Beavers to just 79 yards rushing.

It marks the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor of Williams' career and the first for the Sun Devils this year.

Earning Pac-10 Offensive and Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honors were quarterback Cody Pickett of Washington and punt returner Keenan Howry of Oregon, respectively.

Arizona State returns to the gridiron Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium, playing host to the No. 13/11 Washington Huskies at 7:15 p.m.
